Guideline to prepare quilt top for longarming

Best practice is to have your quilt top ironed and free of extra threads, but as we are quilters, threads just follow us everywhere! There are a few reminders to follow to arrive at the best quilt top ever!

  • When sewing on your borders, take the time to pin.
  • Measuring is needed to ensure you have the right amount of fabric border to add. Measure at the top, middle and bottom and average your measurements to know how much fabric to cut for the borders. Repeat for additional borders.
  • Iron your seams to create the best intersection of your blocks, whether its nesting the seams or pressing them open.
  • Provide batting (or purchase from us- 100% cotton) that is at least 4″ longer and 4″ wider than the quilt top.
  • Provide a backing that is 8″ longer and 8″ wider than your quilt top.
  • Take your time putting together your quilt top- it’s hard to hide your quilting secrets from your quilter!

Please have your quilt top and other fabric materials odor and pet hair free. If your quilt top has an unpleasant smell, we do have the right to decline your longarm request submission.

When you meet for your intake appointment (local only) measuring will be done then. If you are shipping your quilt, please measure at the top (left to right of the quilt top) in inches, rounding to the next whole inch for WIDTH and measure in the middle (top to bottom of the quilt top) in inches, rounding to the next whole inch for LENGTH. Report these numbers on the Longarm Request Form.

When providing your own batting (we have 100% cotton available for purchase) please have at least 4 inches wider and 4 inches longer than quilt top.

Likewise, your backing should be at least 8″ wider and 8″ longer than your quilt top. Thank you!
